2027 Plan Details

Learn what's new for 2027

Even though benefits aren’t changing this year, Open Enrollment is still a good time to make sure your coverage still meets your needs. Some plans also require you to re-enroll each year, such as the healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts.

Review the information below for a summary of what’s new for the upcoming year.

Your HSA and FSAs are moving to Fidelity in 2027

Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, Fidelity will become the new service provider for your IU-sponsored health savings account and flexible spending accounts, replacing WEX. This move brings more of your IU benefits together under one platform, giving you access to your HSA, FSA, and retirement accounts through Fidelity NetBenefits.

Medical coverage

All medical plans

  • There will be no changes to employee premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, coinsurance, or copays for medical services.
  • The salary thresholds used to determine premiums will be adjusted to help maintain more affordable rates for employees in lower salary tiers. See 2027 premium rates.

Dental coverage

  • There will be no changes to premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket maximums, coinsurance, or copays for medical services.
  • The salary thresholds used to determine premiums will be adjusted to remain aligned with the medical plan salary bands. See 2027 premium rates.
  • The following dental plan limits took effect Jan. 1, 2026, and remain in effect for 2027:
    • Panoramic and full-mouth X-rays: Coverage is limited to once every 60 months, changed from once every 36 months.
    • Crowns and bridges: Replacement is limited to once every 84 months (seven years), changed from once every 60 months (five years).

Health Savings Account (HSA)

As mentioned above, your IU-sponsored HSA is moving to Fidelity in 2027. Learn more about the upcoming transition.

  • The IRS contribution limit will increase to $4,500 for employee-only coverage and $9,000 for all other coverage levels. The age 55 and older catch-up contribution will remain the same at $1,000.
  • The university's annual HSA contribution will remain the same at $1,000 for employee-only coverage and $2,000 for all other coverage levels. This will continue to be deposited in two installments—half in January and half in July.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

As mentioned above, your IU-sponsored FSAs are moving to Fidelity in 2027. Learn more about the upcoming transition.

Healthcare FSA

  • The annual contribution limit will increase to $3,400 per individual with a $50 minimum contribution.
  • The annual carryover amount will increase to $680 with a $50 minimum required to carry over funds.
  • The limited purpose healthcare FSA will have a separate name in 2027. If you enroll in both an HSA and healthcare FSA, your FSA will be listed as a “limited purpose healthcare FSA” with Fidelity and IU. This is not a new benefit and does not require a separate election or change how the account works. When you have an HSA, your FSA funds can only be used for dental and vision expenses until you meet your medical plan deductible, at which point you can also use them for medical expenses. IU’s plans have always worked this way; we’re simply giving it a name and displaying it separately to make it easier to coordinate your accounts.

Dependent Care FSA

  • No changes to the plan. The annual contribution limit remains $7,500 per household with a $50 minimum contribution.

Supplemental AD&D

  • No changes to the plan or premiums.

Critical Illness Insurance

  • No changes to the plan or premiums.
